Unlocking the Power of the Throat Chakra: Embrace Communication, Choice and Truth

The Throat Chakra (Vishuddha)

The Center of Communication, Choice & Truth

The Throat Chakra, Vishuddha, is our luminous blue center of communication, expression,

and truth. It is the energetic home of our voice, not just in words spoken aloud, but in the quiet truths we carry within our hearts. This chakra invites us out of silence, out of hiding, and out of old stories rooted in fear or shame. It calls us to speak honestly, to ourselves first, and then to the world. When we begin to listen closely, we often uncover subconscious beliefs such as “I’m not worthy” or “My voice doesn’t matter.” Through awareness, we start to recognize these thoughts for what they are, lies and we gently replace them with truth:

“I am worthy. My voice matters.”

To be responsible, in the deepest sense, is to speak truth, with compassion, clarity, and courage.

Development & Purpose

The throat chakra begins developing between the ages of seven and twelve and continues evolving into early adulthood. Like all chakras, it continues to mature throughout our lifetime. Vishuddha governs how we express ourselves, how we communicate our needs, and how honestly we live our personal truth.

Located at the center of the neck, the throat chakra focuses our ability to:

  • Communicate clearly

  • Vocalize our needs and boundaries

  • Share our inner world with authenticity

When this chakra is balanced, we speak with confidence and calm assertiveness. Our words align with our values. When it is unbalanced, we may struggle to express ourselves, leading to misunderstandings, frustration, or silence when we long to be heard.

Mental & Physical Connections

It’s easy to see which parts of the body the throat chakra governs. Vishuddha rules over the throat and neck, as well as the mouth, lips, teeth, jaw, shoulders, ears, and lymphatic system.

Simply put—if it helps you listen or speak, it is likely influenced by the throat chakra.

When the throat chakra is out of alignment, we may experience:

  • Frequent sore throats or lingering coughs

  • Tightness in the neck or shoulders

  • Teeth grinding or jaw clenching

  • Lip biting or chronic throat irritation

These symptoms arise when we hold back our words, swallow our emotions, carry the weight of the world that isn’t truly ours or silence ourselves.

Expression, Listening & Balance

The throat chakra governs not only how we speak, but how we listen. True communication is a two-way exchange. When we listen deeply to others, without interrupting or judging, we strengthen our connections and expand our understanding. We cannot truly connect if we dismiss others’ feelings or ignore our own inner voice. Vishuddha reminds us that listening is just as powerful as speaking.

A throat chakra becomes blocked when we cannot express ourselves through speaking or writing. When blocked, we may:

  • Feel timid or dependent on others

  • Fear public speaking or being seen

  • Sit in self-judgment and self-doubt

  • Avoid sharing or speaking truth

Living a lie, hiding our truth, or staying quiet about what truly matters can slowly constrict this chakra.

When the throat chakra is overactive, we may:

  • Talk excessively or interrupt others

  • Gossip or exaggerate

  • Struggle with honesty or confidentiality

Balance is found not in silence or excess, but in authentic expression.

“Speak your truth, even if your voice shakes.”

Healing Through Sound & Song

One of the most powerful ways to heal the throat chakra is through singing. Whether you sing alone, in the car, in the shower, or with others, doesn’t matter. Singing opens the throat, releases self-judgment, and allows energy to move freely.

Let go. Belt it out. Be imperfect.

Sound is medicine.

Another way to heal this chakra is through journaling. Writing allow you to release your thoughts, feelings, truths and even your untruths onto the page. When everything is expressed without filtering or fear, self-judgement begins to soften. As that inner critic quiets, the shoulders can relax, the breath can deepen, and space is created to communicate more freely, clearly, and honestly. First with yourself, and then with others.

A Personal Reflection

In 2013, I was in an accident that deeply affected my throat, third eye, and crown chakras. For a long time, I couldn’t translate words from my mind to my mouth. It was heartbreaking and frustrating. Before the accident, I was outgoing. I ran my own practice, worked with clients, attended classes, and communicated professionally with ease. Suddenly, speaking felt uncertain. I became quiet, afraid of embarrassment, unsure if I could get my point across. Over time, I discovered that while speaking felt blocked, writing did not. I would write words out in the air in front of me, slowly reconnecting with my voice in a new way.

Eventually, I gave myself permission to open up—even when it was slow, even when it felt awkward. I still get stuck on words sometimes. I still judge myself occasionally. And then I remember:

I am human.

I deserve self-love.

I deserve respect.

“Healing doesn’t mean returning to who you were. It means honoring who you are becoming.”

As you sit with this information, ask yourself, “What truth is quietly asking to be spoken through me, and how can I honor it with kindness and courage?”

If an answer doesn’t come, is there some journaling you can do to come close to this answer?

Next time, the third eye chakra.

In joy, Bobbie
