The Root Chakra: Learning to Feel Safe Again

A Case Study in Grounding, Survival, and Coming Home to the Body (Emily)

Opening Reflection

“Safety is not always something we were given…but it is something we can learn to create within ourselves.”

There is a kind of exhaustion that comes from always feeling like something might go wrong.

Not because it is, but because your body never learned that it wouldn’t.

The root chakra, our foundation, our sense of safety, our connection to being alive, holds these stories.

And when it is out of balance, life can feel less like living… and more like bracing.

I have carried this with me for most of my life. It hasn’t been until the last few years that I began to understand where the bracing and the anxiety truly came from.

In the early part of my life, through the eyes of my 10-year-old self, nothing felt like it was missing. Life felt full in the ways a child understands. But over time, our family grew—until there were more of us than we could comfortably afford.

My dad worked so hard to provide for us. Our family grew to eight children, and still, we relied on church welfare for food and shopped at thrift stores to get by.

And somewhere in the middle of that, something shifted inside of me.

It didn’t feel safe when I heard that we couldn’t pay our bills. It didn’t feel safe when I heard the words “cannot afford.”

Those moments didn’t just pass, they settled into my body.

And through the years, I’ve found myself returning to that place, that quiet, bracing feeling. But now, I also find myself returning to the practices, the awareness, and the grounding that I’m sharing here.

Learning, slowly… gently…

That I am safe now.

Meet Emily

Emily is 34 years old.

She has a stable job, pays her bills on time, and shows up for the people she loves. From the outside, her life looks steady. Grounded, even.

But inside, it feels very different.

There is a quiet, persistent anxiety that follows her throughout the day. It’s not always loud. Sometimes, it’s just a tightness in her chest, a subtle unease, a sense that she can’t fully relax.

At night, it gets louder.

Her mind begins to wander into “what if’s.”

What if something happens to her job? What if she can’t support herself? What if everything she’s built suddenly falls apart?

There is no immediate danger. And yet… her body feels like there is.

A Deeper Truth

“The body remembers what the mind tries to move on from.”

Emily didn’t always feel this way.

But her story began in an environment where stability wasn’t guaranteed.

Growing up, money was inconsistent. Some months felt okay, others felt uncertain. There was love in her home—but not always emotional safety. Support came and went, depending on what the adults around her were going through.

As a child, Emily adapted.

She became aware. Alert. Responsible.

She learned how to anticipate problems before they happenen, how to read the room, how to prepare.

And while those skills helped her survive…

Her body never learned how to stop.

Understanding the Root Chakra

The root chakra, located at the base of the spine, is our energetic foundation.

It is connected to:

  • Safety

  • Survival

  • Stability

  • Financial security

  • Physical grounding

  • Trust in life

When balanced, it allows us to feel:

  • Calm in our bodies

  • Supported by life

  • Present in the moment

  • Able to rest without fear

But when it is imbalanced…

We may feel like we are constantly holding ourselves together.

Chakra Imbalance Can Look Like:

  • Chronic anxiety or underlying fear

  • Financial stress or scarcity mindset

  • Overworking or over-preparing

  • Difficulty relaxing or resting

  • Feeling disconnected from the body

  • Tension in the hips, legs, or lower back

  • A sense of “waiting for something to go wrong”

Emily didn’t realize it at first…

But she wasn’t just “an anxious person.”

She was living in a body that had never been taught safety.

Grounding Truth

“You are not broken. You are responding exactly as your body was taught to survive.”

The Turning Point

Emily reached a moment where she realized she couldn’t think her way out of this anymore.

She had read the books. Tried to “stay positive.” Told herself everything was fine.

But her body didn’t believe her.

And that’s when something shifted.

Not through control.

But through curiosity.

A Playful Beginning

Instead of trying to fix herself, Emily tried something new:

She began to get curious about her anxiety.

Almost like it was a character.

“What are you trying to show me?” she would ask.

Some days, she imagined it as a little guard dog—always alert, always scanning for danger.

Not bad.Just, overworked.

And for the first time, instead of pushing it away, She softened toward it.

Reflection

“What if your anxiety isn’t the enemy… but a part of you that learned to protect you a little too well?”

The Healing Journey

Healing the root chakra isn’t about forcing calm.

It’s about creating safety in small, consistent ways—until the body begins to trust again.

Emily started gently.

Not perfectly. Not all at once.

Just one moment at a time.

1. Coming Back Into the Body

At first, this felt like the hardest part.

Stillness made her uncomfortable. Silence felt loud.

So instead of forcing stillness, She added a little movement.

She would sway side to side. Shift her weight. Gently rock on her feet.

It felt small. Almost silly.

But it worked.

Her body didn’t feel trapped anymore.

It felt included.

2. Reconnecting to the Earth

Emily began taking short walks outside.

But this time, she added play.

She pressed her feet a little heavier into the ground. She noticed textures like concrete, grass, dirt. She even tried walking barefoot in her backyard one afternoon.

It made her laugh.

It also made her feel, here.

3. Rewriting Safety

Instead of trying to convince herself the future would be okay,

Emily focused on now.

  • “In this moment, I am safe.”

  • “Nothing is wrong right now.”

  • “I am here. I am okay.”

And sometimes… she placed a hand on her heart and one on her lower belly as she said it.

Giving her body something to feel, not just think.

4. Creating Structure as Self-Love

Her routines became softer.

Less rigid. More supportive.

Tea in the morning. Music while cooking. Lighting a candle at night.

Not control.

Care.

Root Chakra Ritual: “Shake, Stomp, and Land”

This is where everything began to shift for Emily.

Not in her mind, but in her body.

How to Practice

Put on a song with a steady, grounding beat (drums are perfect).

Then:

1. Start with shaking Gently shake out your hands, your arms and your legs. Let it be loose. Unstructured. A little messy.

2. Add stomping Begin to stomp your feet into the ground. Feel the impact. Feel your weight.

Let your body take up space.

3. Move your hips Sway, circle, rock. Let your lower body lead.

This is your root, your foundation, your waking up.

4. Breathe and sound (if it feels good) Exhale through your mouth. Maybe even let out a sigh… or a low sound.

5. Come to stillness Place your feet firmly on the ground. Hands on your thighs or lower belly.

Pause.

Feel.

Anchor It In

Whisper (or think):

“I am here.”“I belong in my body.”“I am supported.”

Ritual Truth

“You don’t think your way into safety… you move your way into it.”

The Shift

Healing didn’t happen overnight.

But something began to change.

Emily wasn’t fighting herself anymore.

She was meeting herself.

She could pause before spiraling. Breathe instead of bracing. Feel her body instead of leaving it.

The fear softened.

And in its place came something steady.

Closing Reflection

“You were always meant to feel safe in your own life.”

Coming Home to the Root

Root chakra healing is not about becoming fearless.

It is about learning, slowly and gently:

You don’t have to live in survival mode anymore.

You can rest. You can breathe. You can be here.

Final Quote

“And slowly, the ground you were searching for… becomes the ground you stand on.”
